The Plastic Odyssey expedition
For more than a decade, Plastic Odyssey has pursued a clear mission: to train a new generation of recycling practitioners able to turn plastic waste into lasting economic opportunities.
For three years, the team travelled the world aboard a ship equipped with an onboard recycling workshop. From Senegal to the Indian Ocean and the Philippines, the expedition visited more than 200 recycling businesses and trained over 500 entrepreneurs directly in the field. Each port call helped us gather the best technical know-how and the keys to success of today’s recyclers.
This journey around the world helped us develop a replicable model of decentralised factories that can process waste efficiently and profitably.Â
Today, around a dozen Plastic Odyssey recycling units are already operating around the world. Our online training explores this type of factory in detail to help you learn how to develop your own waste-processing project.
Plastic Odyssey has already developed and shared dozens of open-source plans, technical guides and educational resources consulted thousands of times around the world. Plastic Odyssey Academy brings these resources together in a comprehensive professional training programme developed with experts from every continent.
About the online training
This online training draws on these technical experiences and human encounters. It brings together Plastic Odyssey’s fieldwork and makes essential know-how accessible to people who want to design, structure and develop a decentralised plastic waste recycling factory.
The programme currently available includes:
- 3 training courses
- An introduction and previews accessible without an account
- A free programme to follow at your own pace
- Videos filmed in Plastic Odyssey factories and with recycling experts around the world
- Case studies to explore the keys to success of experienced entrepreneurs
- Technical advice drawn from operating Plastic Odyssey units
- Ready-to-use documents: workstation sheets, maintenance schedules, safety signs and more
- Technical plans: machines, moulds and other key equipment you can build yourself.
Three courses are currently available to guide you step by step in understanding and setting up a plastic recycling activity. Courses 4 to 8 are in preparation:

- Course 3: Organise collection (2h15)
- Course 4: Prepare material for recycling - In preparation
- Course 5: Shape molten plastic - In preparation
- Course 6: Recycle safely - In preparation
- Course 7: Preventive maintenance - In preparation
- Course 8: Environment: minimise the impact of your activity - In preparation
This training is for entrepreneurs, technicians, engineers and students who want to take practical action against plastic pollution, particularly in low-income countries. It is for people who want to create jobs, reduce environmental impacts and turn a global problem into a local opportunity.
